Extra Volunteers Needed at Food Bank
COLUMBIA - The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri is asking for extra volunteers until Friday to handle a large shipment of frozen food.
Communication coordinator Scott Gordon says the food bank's 8,000 square-foot freezer is at full capacity. The freezer is packed from floor to ceiling with donated frozen food, and more is on its way. Gordon said vendors last week donated more frozen goods than usual and expects another large donation this week.
The food bank issued a special call for volunteers through social media outlets on February 4. A status on its Facebook page read, "ALERT!! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED NOW! We need volunteers immediately to help in getting a big food shipment packaged and out the door. IF YOU OR YOUR GROUP OR ORGANIZATION CAN HELP this week or next, PLEASE call TFB right away."
Volunteer scheduler Melanie Lake said the food bank normally sees a decrease in volunteers during the first months of the year. However, more than 400 volunteers already offered a helping hand last week alone. "You put the need out there," said Lake, "and people respond."
More volunteers are needed to help package frozen goods so the food bank can distribute it to 132 pantries across Central and Northeast Missouri, and prepare for more donations this week.
"The more (volunteers) the better," Lake said. "We can put on 90 volunteers per shift. I'm game to put on as many as we can. We would welcome any and all help we can get. Even if it's just an hour of your time, it really helps."
