Family Fun Fest promotes mental and physical health in Columbia
COLUMBIA – Free, informative and fun family activities can be tough to come by, but Columbia Parks and Rec has your family in mind. Wednesday night was the kick off event for a summer of Family Fun Fests at Cosmo Park in Columbia.
These events featured roughly 20 organizations with informational booths and interactive activities, as well as food trucks, live entertainment and more.
Recreation Specialist Cassie Dins said the food trucks are a new feature this year and one that she is looking forward to.
The third Wednesday of each month this summer the Family Fun Fest will feature a different family-friendly theme with pertinent activities that will guide kids to be healthy and responsible. Tonight’s was “Be Kind, Be Healthy.” The focus was kindness and mental and physical health.
“The idea is to have a healthy mind and a healthy body,” Dins said. “And to know a simple act of kindness can change the world forever.”
Families could partake in a Bike, Walk and Wheel Week fun ride/walk around the park’s fitness trail or play with bag tosses, hoola hoops and in bounce houses to promote physical activity.
Kids and parents alike also braided friendship bracelets, planted flowers, did arts and crafts and danced to live music.
Families can look forward to themes promoting environmental awareness, creativity, and global and cultural appreciation later this summer.
