Fights Erupt At Student Apartment Complex
COLUMBIA - Multiple fights erupted at The Grove Friday night when three apartment parties converged, residents say.
The Grove resident Stephanie Hopp said she was in her apartment watching T.V. when the noise level of a neighbor's party started to rise.
"I started to hear arguing, banging and someone hitting up against my wall," Hopp said. "I looked out my window and I could see people pushing each other, close to the stairs."
After looking out another window, she said she saw the parking lot filled with people, and then fights started to erupt.
"It looked like a bunch of people on one guy," she said. Aside from that fight--which other residents estimate roughly 10 people fighting one--Hopp said she saw other fights happening.
Hopp's roommate Jayme Gardner said people hit and rolled over cars in the parking lot. She estimated about 75 people in the parking lot total.
"There were spills in the hallway, splatters on the wall, a few drops of blood on the sidewalk, and some hand prints on cars," Gardner said.
Hopp said she called the police at about midnight and again at about 12:10 a.m., and three police units showed up at just after 12:30 a.m.
By then, Hopp said most of the fights had broken up.
Hopp's boyfriend Ryan Makurat, who was in the apartment at the time, said the parties started about 9 p.m. or 10 p.m., and the people all cleared out of the lot at about 1 a.m.
The Columbia Police Department has acknowledged the incident, but has not released any further information.
