Forum Boulevard goes down to one lane temporarily
COLUMBIA – Drivers were urged take extra caution on Forum Boulevard starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Forum Boulevard was set to go down to one lane for at least three hours for the contractor to receive structural steel beams for the Forum Pedestrian Bridge over Hinkson Creek.
Director of Public Works David Nichols said rain might have an affect on the how long the process takes.
“It’s all about safety once it rains things get wet. Handling 80 foot girders of a large piece of steel is something to keep an eye on,” Nichols said.
“So if it does start to rain they’ll probably post pone that and use their backup date.”
The backup date would be on Wednesday, May 25.
In a news release, public works said the restricting of the road to one lane is the safest option to get the structural steel on site.
Nichols said the contractor chose the option that would cause the least amount of delay to drivers.
“It is a high volume road at this particular time, that’s why we waited until nine to get past that rush hour. We encourage alternate routes if at all possible.”
