COLUMBIA - The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Columbia, Jefferson City, and Mexico from Thursday through Saturday evening. This is the first heat advisory for mid-Missouri this summer.

The service issues heat advisories any time the heat index reaches 105 degrees or more. That will be the case for the Fourth of July weekend until Saturday night.

There are some precautions you can take to stay safe in the heat. The National Weather Service recommends you drink lots of water and try to avoid drinking alcohol during the hottest parts of the day. Wear light colored, loose clothing, and avoid strenuous activy.
