JEFFERSON CITY - The Special Learning Center received five iPads Thursday for children in its program with developmental disabilities. The Jefferson City Chamber Leadership Class raised more than $3,500 to buy the tablets. The Special Learning Center works with children with learning and physical disabilites.

Speech pathologists say the iPads are a great way to start communicating with children with Aspergers, Down Syndrome and autism.

"I have used a few of the communication apps for the iPad, and its a great way to facilitate that first attempt at simple communication. It makes the child feel successful right away," said Davye Heine, a speech pathologist at the center.

"My daughter has Down Syndrome, and we have an iPad at home. It's a wonderful tool for speech and communication," said Corey Backues, a member of the chamber's leadership class.

The center also received a $1,500 check to buy apps and other software for the iPads.
