Hickman Senior Wins National Oratory Competition
COLUMBIA - One Hickman High School student will return to Columbia as a big winner after a national competition.
Senior Ashwath Kumar competed in the American Legion's 77th National High School Oratorical Contest Sunday in Indianapolis. The contest was a nation-wide event and the prize was an $18,000 scholarship.
The American Legion Commander of Post 202 Paul Hobbs said Kumar competed in several local and statewide competitions before making it to nationals.
"We are fortunate that young Ashwath Kumar has won all of those competitions, and today we learned that he has also won the national competition which is huge for our post, Hickman High School and the entire community," Hobbs said.
Hobbs said Kumar is one of three Missouri high school students who have won the national competition in the last four years.
