MID-MISSOURI - Local fire departments said Monday that mid-Missouri has enjoyed a Christmas without a major fire.  That good news comes after tragedy in Connecticut where a fire Christmas morning killed five people.

The fire trucks in the Columbia Fire Department headed nowhere over the weekend and Captain John Metz said he is glad the city had a safe Christmas this year.

"We've been fortunate here in Columbia that we haven't had any fire over the Christmas holiday this year or the recent years passed. We have to go all the way back to about 2007 before we had any significant fire over Christmas, so we are really thankful for that," Metz said.

But at the same time, Metz also reminded citizens of the importance of having a working smoke detector or a smoke alarm in their home.

Besides the Columbia Fire Department, offcials of the Boonville Fire Department, the Fulton Fire Department and the Howard County Fire Protection Distrct said there were no fire reports in those jurisdictions during this holiday weekend.
