Jefferson City Area Senator to Announce Future Plans

JEFFERSON CITY - Sen. Mike Kehoe, R-Jefferson City, announced Wednesday he will seek a second term in the Missouri Senate.

Kehoe made the announcement on the last stop of his annual "Flapjack Tour" Wednesday morning at Jefferson City's Memorial Park.

Kehoe serves Cole and six other Mid-Missouri counties. Voters sent him to represent the 6th district in 2010.

The Republican former auto dealership owner said he is qualified to return for a second term because he is a "voice for small business" and "not a professional politician."

"I've been encouraged by folks to continue the fight and to continue to work and represent them down there," Kehoe said.

Kehoe said he is most passionate about returning to the Senate to fight for improvements to utility infrastructure and highway construction and maintenance.

Last session Kehoe sponsored a proposal to put an initiative on the Nov. 2014 general election ballot. The initiative would have allowed voters to decide whether to raise the state sales tax rate by one percent over a ten-year period to pay for road improvements.

Kehoe's proposal failed and now a group of citizens is trying to revive it through the initiative petition process.

Kehoe told KOMU 8 News Wednesday he will not file another bill for the ballot initiative because it would likely meet the same roadblocks it did in the last legislative session.

"The folks that felt strongly that it shouldn't go on the ballot are still in the Senate and I'm not sure they're going to change their position on that," Kehoe said. "Right now I would think that the initiative petition process is probably the best route to get to the ballot next November."

The Missouri Democratic Party has not yet returned KOMU 8's inquiry into whether the party has selected any candidates to run for the seat Kehoe currently occupies.
