The Camdenton Lakers are on a little bit of a streak. For the past several seasons they have made it up to the quarterfinals only to find themselves coming up short on game 12. For the past two seasons the Lakers have dropped the quarterfinal game to Parkway Central. But looking across the state, there are lots of teams who would like to have that kind of success year after year. According to Head Coach Jeff Shore, "The season was very fun with the only conference loss coming to Kickapoo in a very close contest, losing by two points." The Lakers had a very talented team last year and unfortunately lose an important group of players. "The team graduated a very talented senior group that was very fun to coach and watch play," said Coach Shore.
For this coming season, the Lakers will be looking into their team depth a little bit more than in the recent past. They have just four starters returning on offense and two on defense. This is a nice challenge for Coach Shore and his assistants--- Shawn Maschino, Nick Bruck, Parr Pitts, Lance Foulk, Andrew Nolting, and Steve Bayless---and they are sure they have the players to step into the starting roles.
The offense looks to be pretty balanced but it will start the season with only four full-time starters returning. The offensive line features senior CJ Stanton (6-0, 275) at center who earned 3rd Team All-State and All-Conference honors. Senior Henry Brownell (6-3, 300) is a big time player on the line as well and should earn some post-season honors. He and Stanton have worked hard in the off-season in the weightroom preparing themselves and leading the newer O-Linemen. Senior Josh Martin (5-9, 175) ran for almost 450 yards and four scores last season and will be the feature back this year. Joey Ginnings (6-1, 210), another senior, will be the starting tight end this season. This season the quarterbacking position will be manned by senior Jordan Knight (6-2, 180). He has been preparing for this season for three years; He will finally become the full-time starter and leader of the offense. Other players who are set for starting spots include senior lineman Justin Murdock (5-11, 255) and junior Parker Pitts (6-1, 255) filling those open spots along the offensive front. Michael Terry (6-3, 200) will start the season at wide receiver. The junior has good hands and excellent size for a wideout. Senior Kegan Ray (5-9, 215) will help solidify the Laker ground game.
Defensively, the Lakers will need to replace some important players lost to graduation. According to Coach Shore, "We have good experience with the players filling those roles." They will build the defense around 3rd Team All-State, senior Alexx Wilsman (6-4, 245) at defensive end. The only other returning starter is Josh Martin at linebacker. Several seniors will dot the defensive lineup. Also on the line are Landon Knopf (6-4, 220) and Kegan Ray. The linebackers have good athletes, especially in the form of senior Ty McDuffy (6-3, 210) and Parker Pitts. From Coach Shore, "The secondary will be solid with Jacob Wise (5-9, 170) and Oliver Thompson."
The Camdenton Lakers are looking forward to another championship caliber season. Although there are several new faces in the starting lineup, most have had game experience. The Lakers players and coaches have had fun on their long run of success and that seems to lead to more success each season. The Ozark Conference is always a tough one, and the Lakers will probably be tested just about every week. With the talent on defense and a skilled offensive unit, the Lakers will also be a hard win for any opponent. If the recent history holds true, the Camdenton Lakers will be playing their best football by the end of October and games in November will also be in their future. It is hard to go against the success that the Lakers have been having by the Lake.
