COLUMBIA- Cavanaugh Noce is officially on the bench as the city's new municipal judge following his swearing in ceremony Wednesday.

Columbia's Deputy City Counselor since May 2012, Noce is replacing Judge Robert Aulgur following his retirement today after 13 years working for the city.

As a municipal judge, Noce will preside over cases involving ordinance violations, traffic violations, and marriage ceremonies.

Noce told KOMU 8 News the next few months will be vitally important for him as he transitions into his new role.

"I think in the next few months just understanding what the process is, actually experiencing it and then trying to see if theres anything else that we can help with the public or make things better," Noce said.

During the ceremony, Judge Aulgur expressed his confidence in Noce fulfilling his duties as judge. Aulgur did, however, stress to Noce the importance of being well rested in order to ensure everyone who walks through the court doors receives the best from him as judge as possible.

Chosen this past October by the city council, Noce beat out five other candidates that were under review for the position.

Overall Noce said he is eager to begin serving the community.

"I think it's going to be a very interesting challenge and I really appreciate that the city council has given me this opportunity to serve the public," he said.
