FULTON - Local agencies are helping residents beat the heat by opening cooling centers to the public. Temperatures are in the upper 90's and are expected to reach triple digits this week.

The Callaway Senior Center will allow the public to come in an air-conditioned building to cool off from the heat. The center is open Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public can enjoy card games, pool tables, or watching television during their visit.

Senior administrator Amanda Young said if they need to extend hours for weekend usage they will do so.

Callway Senior Center also offers lunch from 11 p.m. until noon on week days. Senior citizens over the age of 65 can eat for free. Anyone under the age of 65 can eat for $6.50.

Other agencies are also trying to help the public beat the heat. SERVE, Inc. is donating fans and Central Missouri Community Action provides energy assistance to those in need during summer months.
