COLUMBIA - A new community center to support veterans will soon be coming to Columbia, but before construction can begin on the site, more funds have to be raised.

On Thursday, supporters of Welcome Home, Inc., a organization that supports veterans in Columbia, will be attending a fundraiser to continue supporting the group's capital campaign.

The campaign, which was announced nearly one year ago, is raising funds for a new campus that would be a collaboration between the Columbia Housing Authority, Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital, and Welcome Home.

The proposed site is located on Business Loop 70, and would have 25 one bedroom apartments, a transitional facility that would have 29 temporary beds, and a support services center.

The support services center will be designed for vocational training, financial and employment needs, programming space, along with a commercial kitchen and dining room.

According to Welcome Home, an estimated construction date will not be established until all funds are raised through the capital campaign.

The fundraiser reception will begin Thursday at 5 p.m. at Inside Columbia's Culinary Adventures on East Broadway in Columbia.
