McCaskill Hosts Student Discussion on Loan Debt
COLUMBIA - Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Missouri, hosted a roundtable discussion Thursday to discuss the future of student loan rates and how loan debt affects students.
Sixteen students ranging from underclassmen to doctoral candidates joined McCaskill at the MU Student Center. The students discussed their personal experiences with loans and plans for repaying the debt plus interest. They also discussed the increase in loan interest rates scheduled to happen this summer.
The interest rate for federally subsidized student loans is currently 3.4%. In July, the rate will double to 6.8%. MU student Emma Meek hopes discussions like these will help future students deal with loans but also that the government find ways to help these students.
"This is really important for me just because I know I'm going to have at least $30,000 worth of debt when I get out of school," Meek said. "I think it's important to talk about this now before the problem arises and fix it directly."
