Missouri Fans Proceed With Caution in Final Four Predictions
COLUMBIA - Maybe Missouri fans have simply seen too much.
Despite one of the nation's most prolific offensive attacks and a top-10 ranking, most of the MU basketball fans KOMU encountered Friday refused to predict a Final Four for the Tigers on camera. Who can blame them? Although Norm Stewart, Quin Snyder and Mike Anderson all led Missouri to Elite Eight appearances during their tenures, the Tigers have never reached the Final Four. In fact, they hold a distinct record: besides BYU, no other college basketball program has more NCAA Tournament appearances without a Final Four than Missouri.
Age played a major role in the cynicism of fans KOMU found in downtown Columbia. Fans old enough, say, to remember Tyus Edney feared they may jinx the Tigers chances by making such a bold prediction to us.
Those youngsters, though, have no concept of Missouri's heartbreaks over the years. They've never heard of Edney, and they have no reason to believe the Tigers will fall short of a trip to New Orleans this year.
"If we don't make it, then I guess I'm going to have to apologize, but we're going to make the Final Four. This is our year," MU freshman Monique Montgomery said.
