COLUMBIA - The Mizzou volleyball team opened its 2011 season with the annual Black & Gold Scrimmage at the Hearnes Center and the Gold Team topped the Black Team, 3-0, on Friday night at the Hearnes Center. Freshman Emily Wilson led the way for the Tigers with 16 kills on .368 hitting with a pair of solo blocks.

"I thought we finished up well," head coach Wayne Kreklow said. "I thought at the beginning we looked a little rough around the edges since we have so many newcomers. There were a lot of shaking hands, short breathing and people were excited and nervous. But as we got ready and as we played, I thought they settled down. For the first time playing in front of people, I thought we looked okay."

Aside from Wilson's performance on Friday, another freshman had a fine outing as Whitney Little finished with 11 kills on 23 attacks. Also on offense, sophomore Lisa Henning picked up right where she left off following her All-Big 12 Freshman Team performance in 2010. She finished the match with 14 kills on 26 attacks with just four errors. All-Big 12 Preseason honoree Brittney Brimmage had 10 kills on 17 swings with just one error (.529 hitting) while freshman Katie O'Brien added 13 kills. All-Big 12 Preseason selection Molly Kreklow finished with 33 assists on the night as well, quarterbacking the Tiger offense.

Defensively, senior libero Priscilla Armendariz led the way with 14 digs while freshman defensive specialist Jade Hayes finished with 11 digs. Ashton Bodenstab pitched in nine as well. In all, the Tiger block was very tough as well as the two teams combined for 14 in the three sets.

Mizzou will open the season with the annual Tiger Invitational next weekend at the Hearnes Center.
