MoDOT Unveils 20-Year Transportation Plan

JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Department of Transportation unveiled its 20-year transportation plan Thursday.

The plan says that after receiving more the 12,000 suggestions, the department came up with four main goals.

  • Take care of the transportation system and services we enjoy today.
  • Keep all travelers safe, no matter the mode of transportation.
  • Invest in projects that spur economic growth and create jobs.
  • Give Missourians better transportation choices (more viable urban and rural transit, friendlier bike and pedestrian accommodations).

But Dave Silvester, MoDOT's district engineer, said after budget cuts the department will not have enough money to expand its current transportation system, and may not even be able to sustain the current conditions. Final-Draft-Full-Tech-Report-11-5-13-final.pdf

The plan shows MoDOT's 2009 budget was $1.3 billion, but by 2019, the budget will be down to $425 million.

Silvester said it may be difficult, but it's up to Missourians to vote for more taxes or higher fees if they want to see the improvements they've requested.
