MU commemorates lives of students who passed away
COLUMBIA- MU staff and students had the opportunity to honor the lives of students who passed away since last April Friday at an event on MU's campus.
MU Remembers is an annual event that remembers and celebrates the lives of MU students who passed away over the last year.
This year, the university remembered 12 students: Trent Bartolomucci, David "Davy" Bland, Cale Boedeker, Ryan Candice, Abbey Felton, Chanel Goodwin-Watkins, Jack Lipp, Christopher Nicklow, Cameron Perkins, Ty Rudder, Gabriel Small and Shannon K. Tatum.
Cale Boedeker was a sophomore studying in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. On September 29, 2014, Boedeker passed away from natural causes.
Zach Knipp, a former roommate of Boedeker's, said there are still many things he misses about him.
"He always had a smile on his face and was always willing to make you laugh or hang out or do whatever so just really his presence and his overall mindset, his personality and his free spirit," Knipp said.
Boedeker, a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity on MU's campus, was loved by many, and Knipp said fraternity brothers and the fraternity's house mom would be in attendance at the event Friday.
Knipp also said having the event at Memorial Union is beneficial.
"Life is precious and you just don't ever know when it could be your last day or it could be someone you're close to's last day, so it's an event to remember those students we have lost, remember their legacy, remember their impact they've had on all our lives," he said.
Memorial Union itself also has a special tie to honoring fallen MU students. The building was built in honor of 117 MU students who died fighting in World War I.
MU Remembers was set to take place at 2 p.m. Friday in Stotler Lounge.
