No Snow Means Road Repairs

COLUMBIA - This year's mild winter has left little work for snow plows. City of Columbia Public Works, Boone County Public Works, and the Missouri Department of Transportation will all use excess snow removal funds for road improvements come spring and summer.

According to MoDOT, snow removal falls under the budget for road maintenance. When the money is not used, it's applied to patching potholes, replacing signs, striping roads, and mowing.

The City of Columbia allows $480,000 annually for snow removal and won't know how much is left for road repairs until the end of the snow season.

According to the Columbia Missourian, $335,000 of that annual budget is reserved for salt. The city has used 200 tons of its 5,000 tons.

MODOT has only used five to seven percent of its salt inventory.
