Police Investigate Jefferson City Break Time Robbery

JEFFERSON CITY - Police said Wednesday afternoon they are investigating an armed robbery at a gas station Tuesday night.

Jefferson City Police Captain Doug Shoemaker said a man walked into a Break Time station at 1907 McCarty Street Tuesday night, pulled a gun, and demanded money from the cashier. Shoemaker said no one was hurt, and the suspect left with "an undisclosed sum of money."

Shoemaker said convenience stores are particularly vulnerable to armed robbery because they are open late and carry cash. He said the suspect may be from the area because criminals tend to operate in areas they are familiar with. He said it's important for store owners to be familiar with the area so they know when something suspicious is going on.

MFA Oil Marketing Director Tom May said employees are told to keep little cash in the register and not be confrontational if they are held up. He said the point is to just get them out of the store.

"Their safety is far more important than a few dollars or a few cigarettes," he said.

Shoemaker said the suspect is a white male of medium build, who wore a blue handkerchief over his face. Police think the suspect may have been the same person who unsuccessfully held up a Subway earlier in the evening. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crimestoppers or the Jefferson City Police Department.
