COLUMBIA - Current and former mid-Missouri post office workers protested Monday afternoon in front of the post office in downtown Columbia. They were picketing because the USPS is considering laying off 42 workers at the Columbia Processing and Distribution Center. Workers said that could eventually force the distribution center to close its doors.

Workers handed out flyers to residents, highlighting how the community would be affected. The flyers highlighted that last year, the facility at Columbia Regional Airport received an award for being number one in 10 out of 12 categories in excellence and efficiency.

One worker said if the Columbia distribution center closed, all Columbia mail would be sent to St. Louis to be processed and distributed, and could delay the mail distribution process.

A public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia.
