COLUMBIA - The Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission created a proposal at this week's city council meeting asking to lift an ordinance preventing skateboarding and other types of skating in the Special Business District downtown.

As of now, the Special Business District will not allow skateboarding of any kind.  The district makes up the central part of downtown Columbia.

The proposed ordinance got mixed reviews from residents in Columbia, some saying that they do not mind the skaters and some saying that skating on the sidewalks downtown can be a nuisance.

The proposal draft asks for the skaters of any kind to be treated with the same traffic laws as bicyclists.

Some residents feel that there should be a path for skaters to use, much like a bike lane.
