Red Cross Calls for Blood Donations in May
COLUMBIA - May 8th is World Red Cross day and the organization is encouraging people to donate blood during the month of May.
The Red Cross is an oragnization that provides care to those in need through five key service areas. Those areas are blood donations, disaster relief, support for America's military famlies, health and safety services and international services.
May 8th was chosen as World Red Cross day because it is also the birthday of Henry Dunant, the founder of The International Federation of The Red Cross. Red Cross spokesperson Dan Fox said today is really about celebrating the men and women who volunteer their time.
"The Red Cross is 90 percent volunteers," Fox said. "Without them we really wouldn't be able to function."
People can volunteer to the red cross in many ways such as helping in disaster relief, volunteering at blood drives or rolling up their sleeves and donating blood themselves.
In honor of World Red Cross Day the organization is encouraging people to donate blood. The need for blood donatations is constant, especially with blood types O-poitive, O-Negative, B-Negative and A-Negative.
