Redefining "Family" Awaits Columbia City Council Vote
COLUMBIA - The Columbia City Council will vote to amend the definition of "family" in the city code, in regard to home occupancy.
Columbia's Planning and Zoning Commission worked on redefining "family" in November at the request of the city council. The commission included "registered domestic partnerships" in the definition of family, which adds unmarried adults with dependent children living together as a family under city code. The amendment also applies to gay couples living together. Previously, the code only considered an individual or married couple with children as a "family."
Part of the existing code includes "two other persons related directly" to the family. This will also now include relatives of unmarried couples.
