COLUMBIA - A consignment store will hold a diaper drive in partnership with Healthy Bottoms Diaper Bank on Wednesday.

People can donate diapers to Kid's Closet Connection, and in exchange, they will get a discount on items in the consignment store, including gently-used clothes, toys and other children's items. KCC sets up a consignment store bi-annually at the Knights of Columbus in Columbia.

The owner of KCC, Ashley Boock, said this is a program the store has done for several years.

"We were just looking for a way that we could give back to the community," Boock said.

According to The White House, about "one in three families struggle to afford diapers for their babies."

For Healthy Bottoms Diaper Bank, this diaper drive is an asset.

"The diaper bank gets to majority of their diapers that they use throughout the year from this event, so it's pretty crucial that we have it and that we have people come out because we're able to help many families that way," Boock said.

Healthy Bottoms Diaper Bank finds families in the area in need that have a need for diapers. A spokesperson from Healthy Bottoms Diaper Bank, Chris Miller, said when families don't have diapers, they can face serious problems.

"As a new father myself, I definitely don't want to see families go through periods of time where they are extending the life wear of a diaper and causing health problems to a baby," Miller said. "I think there's some issues with funding and families having to make hard choices between paying for diapers or paying for formula or other types of nutritional assistance a baby would need or any other nutritional assitance in the home."

In previous years, CoMo Cares sponsored this partnership diaper drive. According to a Facebook post by CoMo Cares, a May 2016 diaper drive gathered 2,898 diapers. Other diaper drives between KCC and CoMo Cares received more than 4,000 diaper donations.

Healthy Bottoms Diaper Bank is in need of sizes four, five and six diapers, as well as pull-ups.

The diaper drive will start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night and will be held at the Knights of Columbus at 2525 North Stadium Boulevard.
