COLUMBIA - Construction will close sidewalks and traffic lanes on Broadway in downtown Columbia starting Monday.

Stephens College will start construction to replace its two walking bridges across both College Avenue and Broadway. The project will last approximately one month. During that time, the access spans will not be open and sidewalks under the bridges will also close during parts of the project. APAC, the project contractor, says pedestrians, cyclists and those using wheelchairs should use caution when crossing the street.

Workers may close lanes of traffic between 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to minimize traffic disruption. Work that requires less than 15 minutes of road closure will happen between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The city of Columbia Public Works department will start street repairs on Monday at the intersection of Broadway and William Street. The construction will force lane restrictions throughout the duration of the project. The department expects to complete the project on the afternoon of Friday, July 13.
