Scott Boulevard reopens to traffic
COLUMBIA - The Columbia Public Works department reopened Scott Boulevard to two-way traffic Friday evening at 8. Despite steady rain on Wednesday and Thursday, Public Works announced there was no delay on the project.
The section of Scott Boulevard between Bellview Drive and Vawter School Road has been closed for five months while crews were working. During that time workers completed extensive work on the stretch of road. This included rebuilding a 360-foot-long bridge over Hinkson Creek.
Crews also installed a new round-about at the Vawter School Road intersection and raised the roadway by nine feet. Workers built a new underpass for the MKT Trail.
Workers laid almost 13,000 square yards of pavement in building a new roadbed and added 32,000 square feet of sidewalk. Crews also installed 2,700 feet of stormwater drainage pipe as well as a new detention and treatment basin for the drainage.
Although the road is open, public works is urging drivers and pedestrians to still exercise caution in the area. The contractor still has additional work to complete on the project.
In addition to finishing work on sidewalks and the sides of the road, public works will be closing a section of Vawter School Road east of the new round-about. The department will announce the closure dates in the near future.
Public works thanks the public for their patience during this project and hope it will continue until the project is fully completed on Oct. 31. Additional information on the construction can be found on the project's city website, ScottBv.com.
