Snow Keeps Columbia Students Out of School Another Day
COLUMBIA - Columbia Public School will be closed Wednesday, for the second day in a row tomorrow, as winter Storm Rocky continues to make its way through mid-Missouri.
According to Michelle Baumstark, the district's community relations director, it's just not safe enough for the students to return. The district is still working to remove all the snow from each school. The other problem is getting students to school. Baumstark said many residential areas are still not clear.
But students do not seem to be complaining. Amelia Hauck spent Tuesday playing in the snow and building snowmen. Hauck and her family eventually ventured out, but only after they cleared their dirveway after road crews hit their street.
"They came through and plowed it. My dad actually ended up using a shovel to shovel most of it away though so we could get out," Hauck said.
As for school on Thursday, Baumstark said it all depends on the progress the district makes while the schools are closed. But she said the heavy snow and the continuing rain/snow mix does not help the snow removal process.
