COLUMBIA - Columbia Independent School's National Honors Society planted 2,977 American flags Thursday along North Stadium Boulevard for each victim of 9/11. The flag project commemorates the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and benefits the Gear Up Foundation, which helps firefighters affected by the tragedy.

One NHS member heard about the flag project at a leadership conference earlier this year. He said he remembered 9/11 vividly, calling it the "Pearl Harbor of our generation". Another NHS member's father served in the Army during Desert Storm. She said each year her family has a moment of silence for those who lost their lives in 9/11.

The NHS decided to suggest a 50 cent donation per flag and coordinate a bake sale this week. They encourage anyone who wants to sponsor a flag to visit Columbia Independent School within the next two weeks.
