Tigers Eye Big 12 Crown, Host Iowa State
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 6 Missouri softball team will close out the 2011 regular season by playing host to Iowa State this weekend at University Field. Game one begins at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, and the finale begins on Sunday at Noon.
Eyeing the Big 12 regular season title, the Tigers are aiming for a sweep of the Cyclones in order to guarantee themselves at least a clinch of the championship. From there, they can only wait and hope that the Texas Longhorns fall to Baylor on Sunday. Should the Longhorns lose and the Tigers complete the sweep, Missouri will claim its first regular season conference crown since 1997.
Missouri's 35-game win streak was extinguished last Saturday at the hands of Texas, ending what was the longest such streak in all of D-1 softball. On the bright side, University Field welcomed 2,404 fans to the game, breaking the previous record of 1,712 set during last year's Super Regionals against Oregon.
Following the conclusion of Sunday's game, the Tigers will honor nine graduating seniors. The list includes Alaina Burkhart, Megan Christopher, Kathryn Poet, Marla Schweisberger, Lisa Simmons, Rhea Taylor, Shana White and Abby Vock.
Iowa State enters the final weekend of the season with a 21-26 overall record and a 3-13 conference mark. Their last win came on April 30 at Baylor, but since then they have lost five straight Big 12 games. Rachel Zabriskie is the team's ace - she's 14-17 on the season and holds an ERA of 4.16.
