COLUMBIA - Columbia's Women and Children's Hospital announced Tuesday that it's closing its adult intensive care unit on June 8th.

MU Health Care Public Relations Manager Mary Jenkins said the intensive care unit hasn't had many patients since changing from Columbia Regional Hospital to Women's and Children's Hospital. Jenkins also said University Hospital has a variety of intensive care units that provide care for all types of medical emergencies. Jenkins said "University Hospital has a far different number of ICU patients than Women's and Children's with an average of 51 ICU patients daily".

Those in need of intensive care will be transferred by ambulance to University Hospital.

The close will displace 11 nurses in the adult intensive care unit. However, Jenkins said each nurse will be given a representative from the MU Health Care system's HR department to work on finding a new job.

There is no word on what will be done with the space that formerly housed the old ICU. Despite the changes Jenkins said intermediate and non-critical patient care will still be provided at the hospital.
