||Along with the 2020 Black History Month theme of Black Vote/Black Liberation, MU Africa Hub is screening The Colors of Heaven. The film is based on a true story and covers the apartheid era (Soweto uprisings which began June 16th, 1976) in South Africa. These uprisings were held by students protesting the requirement of all students to learn Afrikaans, the language of the oppressor. Black South African students protested because they believed they deserved to be treated and taught equally to white South Africans. Political resistance by students has been influential on our campus as well. In September 1986, students protested UM System investments with businesses that had assets in South Africa. Young people have and will continue to play an important role in the Black Liberation movement. Thus, this film, especially with the US upcoming elections, is a call to action and engagement in the political space. Please join us Thursday, February 13th at 6 p.m. in Jesse Wrench Auditorium. We will watch the film, each food, and play Trivia about South Africa.
