COLUMBIA - New court documents detail what led to a shooting that killed 19-year-old E'quan Spain in Columbia early Saturday, Sept. 14.
Michael Leon Anderson III has been charged with 2nd-degree murder in connection to Spain's death.
Police say Anderson, Spain and another man, Aaron Harris, were driving near Park Avenue and Fifth Street in a black Dodge Caliber. According to a probable cause statement, the three men were shooting at another car, a white Jaguar.
During the shooting, police say Anderson shot Spain. It is not clear if they believe the shooting was accidental.
According to the documents, an officer with the University of Missouri Police Department spotted the two men speeding toward University Hospital. Police say Harris was driving the car and Anderson was in the back seat with Spain.
Harris and Anderson were not injured in the shooting, according to the documents.
In addition to murder, Anderson has also been charged with unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action. He is being held in the Boone County Jail without bond.
As of Monday, no charges have been filed against Harris.
