HARRISON COUNTY, Mo - The Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force found 11 dead horses Thursday and rescued 16 more that were severely malnourished.

The Humane Society of Missouri was contacted by the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office earlier this week.

According to a release, the horses ranging in age from foals to 12 years old were without vegetation and had no on-site veterinary care. Rescuers today found a downed horse that was later euthanized by a local veterinarian.

A animal cruelty investigator visited the property and found 11 dead horses in various stages of decay and 16 others in serious jeopardy of starvation. Live horses were found in the same enclosure as dead ones.

The owner, a woman, agreed to relinquish the 16 horses to the Humane Society of Missouri. She also agreed to care for three additional horses remaining on the property.

The rescued horses are being moved to the Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union for rehabilitation before being put up for adoption.

Donations to help with the care of these horses may be made online at www.longmeadowrescueranch.org or by calling 314-951-1542.
