Fulton homeless shelter prepares for winter rushPosted on 10 January 2019 at 8:47pm
FULTON - A Fulton homeless shelter prepared for a spike in visitors Thursday in preparation for the cold weather coming over the weekend.
"Our House: Caring for Callaway's Homeless" is a shelter for homeless men, women and families in Callaway County.
The shelter has housed the most homeless in 2018 with 3721 overnight stays total, and Executive Director Misty Dothage said the cold weather brings even more people.
"The influx of people that come to us is crazy when it gets really cold," Dothage said.
The shelter has a capacity limit, but put extra efforts in during snow to make sure to help as many people as possible.
"We have emergency cots because when cold weather comes, people start knocking on our door," Executive Director Misty Dothage said.
The shelter also provides "warm bags" for those they can't take in with hand warming pads, a blanket and snacks.
"It's not easy for people to just sleep outside on the bench or under a tree, especially with the elements," Dothage said.
Jennifer Pownsend, a former resident of Our House, said sleeping in the cold and not having a place to go was frightening.
"With it being cold and not knowing where to go, I know for a lot of people and for myself, it was really scary," Pownsend said.
Pownsend said the work that Our House does is the reason why she is no longer homeless.
"Without Our House I literally would have had no where to go," she said.
Our House is located at 829 Jefferson St, Fulton. Anyone needing assistance can contact them at 573-642-6065.
