10-year sentence for campus bathroom assault
CLAYTON (AP) - A former student at St. Louis Community College's Meramec campus has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting a female student in a bathroom, a crime that led to the ouster of top officials.
The sentence for 20-year-old Jevon Mallory was handed down Friday. He pleaded guilty to assault in October.
Mallory was caught choking Blythe Grupe in a women's bathroom in April 2013. Police say Mallory either hid in a stall or followed Grupe into the bathroom, then grabbed her around the neck.
An instructor heard Grupe's screams and stopped the assault.
A report commissioned by trustees was critical of how the incident was handled. Three top officials were removed, one resigned, and the chancellor left monts later after her contract was not renewed.
