14-Year-Old Boy Injured After Being Trapped Under Pickup Truck
OSAGE BEACH - Just after construction finished on a bridge in Osage Beach, traffic accidents have continued to be a problem. Emergency personnel responded to U.S. Highway 54 and Key Largo Road Wednesday around 8:30 p.m. in reference to a single vehicle rollover accident.
20-year-old Charles M. Collins was driving a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup west bound on Highway 54 in the outside lane. Authorities said Collins became distracted and drove to the left of the roadway onto the shoulder. Officers then report the front seat passenger, 18-year-old Autumn Atelmaszak, grabbed the steering wheel and jerked it to the right, causing the vehicle to make a sharp right turn and the cross the inside lane of traffic. The pickup then struck the right side guard rail and rolled over several times before resting on its top, which trapped the rear seat passenger, 14-year-old Cody Collins.
Police reported a witness assisted the driver in lifting the vehicle enough for Cody Collins to be pulled out. The boy sustained critical injuries and was flown to the University Hospital. Collins, the driver, and Atelmaszak were transported to Lake Regional Hospital where they were treated and released.
A report of the accident said Collins and Atelmaszak were wearing seat belts, but the young boy was not.
