2 charged after southwestern Missouri deputy shot at during chase
NEOSHO (AP) — Authorities in Newton County said two men were charged with felony assault after one of them allegedly shot at a sheriff's deputy during a chase.
Prosecutors charged 29-year-old Joel Alexander Bell of Carthage and 24-year-old Andrew Mitchell Utley of Webb City with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, as well as with armed criminal action.
Authorities said the deputy was giving chase to Bell and Utley after the vehicle in which they were riding failed to stop for a suspected traffic violation. Investigators said one of the men leaned out of the suspects' car and fired at the deputy before their vehicle crashed.
The deputy was not injured.
Online court records didn't show whether Bell or Utley have an attorney.
