50 years later, ex-St. Louis officer meets baby he rescued
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A retired St. Louis police officer has been reunited with a woman he helped rescue when she was baby more than 50 years ago.
George Leuckel found the baby sitting on a pink blanket in 1963 in a lot after receiving an abandoned child report.
No one knew the baby or the family she belonged to. The child, estimated at 9 months old by doctors, was taken to an emergency foster home.
Leuckel said he was raised in an orphanage and thought about adopting the black child with his wife. But he said there was "no way you could do that back then" in a deeply segregated St. Louis.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Toni DiPina has been trying to solve the mystery of her unknown family. She contacted Lueckel, who welcomed a visit. They met this month and shared stories of their lives.
