JEFFERSON CITY - Ameren Missouri announced a $1.2 million infrastructure upgrade project in downtown Jefferson City on Tuesday.

The company said the upgrade is part of its Smart Energy Plan. The Smart Energy Plan will incorporate Switchgear equipment, a new form of technology designed to improve reliability for businesses and residents.

The plan calls for the upgrades to be implemented between Jackson Street and Broadway, as well as from the Missouri river to McCarty Street.

Each Switchgear box weighs 2,900 pounds and Ameren will install eight units.

Chip Webb, Director for the Central Missouri Division for Ameren Missouri, said the changes will be noticeable.

"It's an opportunity, we can have a big impact on the reliability of Jefferson City and basically allows us to deal with system situations quicker," Webb said. "If power does go out, we an get the power on quicker."

Sarah Davis, a resident at Dulle Towers, said her building experiences power outages frequently. She hopes the new technology will keep the power more reliable.

"It'll be nice if the power wouldn't take 15 hours to turn back on if it does go out," Davis said.

Amarietta Allen said it makes it hard for her grandmother function in her home.

“Ever since she’s been across the hall her cable hasn’t been working very well and neither has her telephone to let us in the building. So she has to come all the way down and my grandma has bad legs,” she said.

Officials say the ultimate goal is to keep consistent power for the whole area.
