Army to Control Some Missouri Recreational Areas
SPRINGFIELD (AP) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it will begin operating some recreation areas previously operated by nonprofit groups.
The Springfield News-Leader reports recreation areas on Table Rock Lake will continue to operate as usual for the time being but tours of the Table Rock Dam will be cancelled.
For two years, Ozarks Rivers Heritage Foundation operated eight parks owned by the corps, including giving tours of the dam.
The corps announced Friday that it believes its agreements with nonprofit organizations to run recreation areas is outside the corps' authority.
Spokeswoman Laurie Driver says the corps is trying to negotiate a new agreement with the foundation. Driver says the public should not notice many changes, except for the cancellation of dam tours.
