Artful bras decorate Ellis Fischel
COLUMBIA - The Ellis Fischel Cancer Center held it's sixth Artful Bra gallery Thursday.
The event was created to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise funds for the cancer center. The center housed a gallery of 40 hand-decorated bras which attendees could silently bid on.
"All proceeds go toward breast cancer patient fund to pay for mammograms for women who could not otherwise afford them," said outreach coordinator Angela Winterbower.
The guests were comprised mostly of physicians, survivors and friends and family of those affected by the disease. The physicians chose the winning bra entry, and event attendees voted to crown the people's choice award winner. There is also one final category made up of solely of in house physicians and the bras they create to compete for the Mizzou Cup.
When asked what makes this event special to her, business support specialist Pam Garfias had a unique answer.
"The survivors themselves that participate," Garfias said. "To listen to their stories...you can think about how it would impact you or your family, but you never know. And you learn by hearing them tell their stories."
Since it began, the event has had bras go for as much as $300 and has raised over $20,000.
