Attorneys Disagree on Campaign-Finance Ruling
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - The lawyer for a candidate who challenged the repeal of limits on political contributions says politicians should have to return excess donations. Attorney Chuck Hatfield filed his brief with the Missouri Supreme Court yesterday. The court asked interested parties to argue whether its ruling in July that restored contribution limits should be retroactive to January. Hatfield argues that once a court rules a law unconstitutional, it has always been so. He says the lawsuit was filed a day after the measure took effect, so candidates should have known they were taking a risk by accepting large donations.
