Auditor Releases Nursing Home Report
The audit said 10% of homes did not have a mandatory inspection last year, and 41% did not have a follow-up inspection. The audit also said inspection results were consistently late, and the department implemented only 9 out of 39 of McCaskill's previous recommendations.
The Department of Health and Senior Services blamed understaffing.
"The department has said for several years that we've needed more staff to complete our statutory requirements," said David Durbin of DHSS, who added the department has implemented, at least in some way, 22 of McCaskill's recommendations.
"There may have been some areas that we could have conducted some additional inspections," he said. "We were not shown where that resulted in any negative outcome."
Durbin said DHSS has received state approval to increase staff and is moving in the right direction.
