Authorities say Cole County Ebola "hoax" was unintentional
COLE COUNTY - Jefferson City police said Tuesday morning the person who made the Ebola report Thursday actually believed the person they were calling about had Ebola-like symptoms. Police said since the caller did not commit a crime and will not face any charges stemming from the incident, they won't be releasing the caller's name.
The call came in to St. Mary's Health Center Thursday morning. The caller claimed a person in their house had recently traveled to West Africa and had Ebola-like symptoms. Although the report turned out to be false, Cole County Health Department Director Kristi Campbell said, "These matters will be taken seriously."
"We will have to treat every call as if it is a real incidence," she said. "We will take what we have learned today and continue to improve our plan and enhance our response."
Police and the health department both said they consider the case closed.
