Baby Boomers Blending Families

Some families are finding that perfect place only minutes from their own homes. Becky Dulany is a baby boomer who is dealing with this situation. For Dulany and her 84-year-old mother Judy Willard, this decision didn't involve picking a care facility. Willard is moving in with Dulany.

"We decided that we had enough property up here, we have four acres, plenty of room to add her an addition on. We discussed it with her, and it just went from there," Dulany said.

The Dulanys added 1200 square feet on to their home to accommodate Becky's mom. The addition includes a bedroom, a bathroom, an office and a kitchen. There are 75 million baby boomers in the US. According to the Pew Research Center's research on baby boomers, 71 percent of baby boomers have at least one parent alive. Twenty percent of those baby boomers helped their parent financially.

"They're here," Willard said. "They'll take care of me."

"This was just the perfect arrangement for both of us. I think, is just to have her here close, where she's not going to bother me. I'm not going to bother her," Dulany said.

Although the move was not a hard choice for Dulany, Lincoln University Sociology Professor Joy Sampson said baby boomers often end up frustrated with this process.

"On the one hand the caregiver really wants to be able to provide, but on the other the elderly may be in a physical and/or mental condition where they cannot be provided for in the home," Sampson said.

Free of this frustration, Dulany and Willard are both ready for this new start.

"I'm excited," Willard said. "That place would excite anyone unless they were blind."

Willard moved in to her new home on September 29. Click on the KOMU.com Extra to see how the family is doing a couple of weeks after the big move-in.
