Big Brothers, Big Sisters Need Volunteers
Columbia - Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Missouri is low on volunteers, leaving nearly 200 kids without a mentor.
While the organization provides 1100 mentors a year in mid-Missouri, there are still 170 children on the waiting list.
"When we have that many parents calling us wanting a friend for their child, that makes it an emergency for us," said Georgalu Swoboda, director. She said that once relationships are formed, youth often model positive behavior after mentors.
Beyond forming relationships, the organization reports added benefits. Kids who have a mentor are less likely to skip school or use drugs and alcohol.
"The big brother-big sister program also provides mentors through the Columbia Public School system. For more information on volunteering opportunities, log on to www.bigsofcentralmo.org or call 573.874.3677.
