COLUMBIA - The Boone County Sheriff's Department said they have received a number of tips about a phone scam from people claiming to be with the department.

BCSD said phone scammers have become sophisticated, manipulating caller ID to be from a number that appears to be from the department. The greeting tone used by scammers is also similar to the one used by BCSD, according to a news release.

Scammers are telling people they have to pay a fee for a failure to show up for jury duty and gives them directions on how to buy a Green Dot card or other product. After that, the people being scammed are told to call another number and give information from the card they buy.

BCSD said several citizens have been scammed out of hundreds of dollars with this scheme.

Anyone who believes they may be receiving a scam call is urged to contact BCSD at (573) 442-6131.
