COLUMBIA - The board of trustees for Boone County Hospital announced five options for ongoing operations of the Boone Hospital Center on Thursday.

Tom Schneider, attorney for the Board of Trustees of Boone Hospital, said this decision was the result of thinking about the future.

"The hospital has been leased with subsidiary of BJC Healthcare in Saint Louis since 1988. The trustees felt that given all the changes in health care, perhaps it might be time to see what might be the best fit going to into the future for Boone Hospital and the citizens of Boone County," said Schneider.

Originally, there were 20 different options before the board narrowed it down to five.

The announcements came after an extensive request for proposals process, according to a news release.

The options include:

  • Establishing another lease agreement with BJC HealthCare of St. Louis
  • Entering into a new lease with Duke Life Point Healthcare
  • Developing a partnership with University of Missouri Health Care
  • Entering into a lease with Saint Luke's Health System of Kansas City
  • Operating Boone Hospital Center on a stand-alone basis

The final option could include the trustees entering into a lease with a new not-for-profit hospital governing board, which would be comprised of local leaders, according to the release.

"I think the trustees see this as a generational decision and the arrangement likely will be a long term arrangement of some sort, so it's a decision the trustees are having to do a lot of due diligence about and that's why it's taking some time," said Schneider.

The release said trustees would not make a selection without first holding public hearings. This would include listening sessions with employees and physicians.

"We are at a point where public hearings will be scheduled as well as meetings with stakeholders, such as Boone Hospital employees and the Boone medical staff," said Schneider. "I think that the public hearings and meeting with stakeholders will occur within the next 60 days."

The current lease between the trustees and BJC HealthCare continues until December 31, 2020, and it will automatically renew unless either party provides written notice of termination in December 2018.

Schneider said the most challenging part is making the right decision.

"These are very challenging times in health care, both federally and the state as well. The big challenge is keeping in mind there's probably going to be a long term collaboration with someone and making sure no rock is left unturned and all the necessary due diligence is done," said Schneider.

Boone Hospital's health care consultant will file a report outlining the options within the next 30 days. It will be available on the Boone Hospital website and hard copies will be available at Daniel Boone Regional Library.
