COLUMBIA – The Ellis Fischel Cancer Center is hosting the Artful Bra Silent Auction Thursday night to create breast cancer awareness. All donations from the auction will benefit patients.

October is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Ellis Fischel Cancer Center invited people to make an original handcrafted bra art piece. The bras will be a part of an art contest as well as a silent auction.

All proceeds will benefit the patient care program that helps pay for needs related to a breast cancer diagnosis, such as medications, supplies and mammography screenings. The funds also help cover lodging costs if a patient is from out of town.

One of the contestants is Liana Twente, who is representing her workplace, Columbia Mall Office.

“This is something that I can actively do that will benefit cancer research and the families. I’m just glad that I can give something back to the real heroes out there that has been battling this,” Twente said.

Jenny Morgan from Westphalia is fighting cancer. In January 2014, she was diagnosed with breast cancer right after she stopped breast feeding her youngest child.

“My first thought and worst fear was that my kids were just too young. If I had died they would not have been able to remember me,” Morgan said.

She was only 36 years old when she got her cancer diagnose. Morgan got surgery and chemotherapy at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and, to her, the patient care program is very important.

“They help take care of the extra cost that doesn’t necessarily get covered by the insurance. Cancer is very, very expensive, even if you have insurance,” Morgan said.

She is now cancer free and wants create awareness and remind both women and men to do their self-breast exams. Morgan was the speaker of last year’s Artful Bra event and Thursday night she will be back at Ellis Fischel sharing more from her personal story.

Entrance tickets to the auction are $10 and can be purchased in the door. The donation will allow you to bid on the different bra art pieces. The event runs from 5.30-7 p.m. at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center.
